“In my painting, which is largely a personal journal, I try to capture moments of the most meaningful spaces in my life.”
- Abigail Jewell
The deeply personal and place-based watercolor artwork of Abigail Jewell, my paternal first cousin, has always been an inspiration for me and for Cultivating Place, the program and its purpose to elevate the way we talk about, see, value, and hold this essential human impulse to tend to and be in relationship to our places, and what is most meaningful to each of us.
Abigail's artwork graced early calendars and notecards for the program and if you've ever been on a Zoom call or talk with me, you've likely enjoyed the epic watercolor portrait of Autumn's harvest of squash and nuts that is visible above my head in my home office. Abigail's work captures an essence of love of place simply and elegantly at the very same time.
Abigail Shelley Jewell is a trained water color artist and avid gardener and cook who spends her time between Atascadero, CA, Little Compton, RI, and The Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. All three places can be seen, felt, and known better through her watercolors of plants and their places.
“For me, place, and the Cultivating of Place, has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I associate gardens, beaches, woodlands, and even houses and rooms with all the family and friends I have ever known.

The scents and atmosphere of places instantly bring vivid memories of people and the times and events that I shared with them. In my painting, which is largely just a personal journal for myself, I try to capture moments of the most meaningful spaces I know.
It is a constant mental exercise to make sense of how the physical, temporal, and spiritual worlds meet and flow together from generation to generation.”
