Candy Matthews is a renowned watercolor artist of plants, food, and flowers or her home garden and larger place in Northern California. Her work is featured in local businesses, hospitals and collections around the North State, and her work graced the cover of Edible Shasta-Butte many times.
Candy's colors, forms, and nature-based graphic realism take everyday arrangements of farm, field, flower, fresh-grown food, and elevate them to the heroes they actually are.
This larger-than-life semi-graphic realism style painting of farmer's market fresh red onions, cut and ready to prep for cooking, is no exception: painterly, potent, and colorful.
Seems fitting for how much we turn to the lowly onion to elevate our cuisine wherever we're from, right? This one would be amazing hung in tandem with the Garlic.....;)
Any kitchen, pantry, office, studio, or well-appointed garden room will be enlivened by a Candy Matthews!
From Candy:
“My saturated hand mixed watercolors are inspired by my surroundings, especially my community farmers market. So many local fruits, flowers, and vegetables from which I draw color and inspiration.
I have drawn since I was a young girl, when my family lived in the Philippines and northern Africa. My earliest memories were of the markets and souks brimming with life – the people, smells, sounds, and brilliant colors. These countries provided me with imagery that I use today.

I am fascinated with the play of shadow and light. My backgrounds are made with layers and layers of hand-mixed color. I paint mainly still life and gather my subjects from my surroundings: compelling and colorful plants, animals, foods.
I frequently paint at my kitchen table; the rectangles and squares of vivid colored backgrounds that often delineate the main subject in my paintings are echoes of our kitchen’s window pane patterns.”
